the balance in the free, active position | This scale is made by August Sauter, from Ebingen, Württemberg in Germany. It is an equal-arm balance for determining the specific gravity of solids and liquids to three decimals exactly. Some catalogs even claim up to four decimals. For use the scale is placed on the wooden box and for storage the parts fit in the drawer of this box. The weighing beam can be parked and released with the lever at the front of the box. The scale includes a set of weight hooks, a thermometer / immersion body according to Reimann, and a cylinder glass. there are also two suspension brackets with an fold-out cross for the loose brass trays for normal weighings. The scale has a lead suspended from a string for leveling. With the two adjustable feet at the front one levels the wooden box with the mounted scale. The Reimann immersion body is a gift from Mr. Rudi Keinath from the Ph.-Matth.-Hahn-Museum, Arbeiskreis Waagen & Gewichte, in Albstadt-Onstmettingen, Germany. I don't have the manual of this scale. Determination of the specific weight of solids and liquids with a balance according to G. Westphal is described in 1870. Friedrich Mohr did this already in 1832. This balance is named precision balance No. 674 in the August Sauter catalogs of the late 1940s, 1950, 1951, 1960 and 1962. | the scale in parked, rest position |
With the suspension brackets and the brass trays the balance can be used for normal weighing, provided you have the necessary weights. These were not supplied with this Sauter balance as standard.
In the Dutch society quarterly magazine Meten & Wegen of September 2003, on pages 2920-2926 is an illuminating article by E.M. van der Ouderaa with the title: Twee balansen van Westphal (Dutch, translated: Two balances of Westphal). In this article instruments for measuring the specific mass of liquids are described, alongside the pycnometer, the aerometer, some hydrometers, the balance of Mohr and the balance of Westphal are described as well and discussed in detail.
Below some more pictures of the equal-arm balance of Sauter, primarily intended to determine the density of solid and liquid substances.
