Kwatta Breda letter scale | This small letter scale was undoubtedly made by Philipp Jakob Maul from Hamburg in Germany. There is no logo or brand of Maul on it, but the construction corresponds to the scales shown earlier on which there is the M logo present, see for example here and the links there given. The scale is 12.5 centimeters high. The weighing range is only 50 grams. The special feature is the advertising on the letter plate for Kwatta Breda. Kwatta was a chocolate factory, founded in 1883 with factories in Breda, the Netherlands and in Belgium. In 2001 the company was taken over by the Heinz group. It is a letter scale, which is why the Dutch postal rates for the Netherlands and abroad are also on the letter plateau. With some difficulty it can be deduced that this letter scale comes from the short period 1937-1940. This is based on data from the book Binnenlandse en Internationale posttarieven van Nederland 1850-1990 written by mr. W.S. da Costa. In Meten & Wegen dec. 1997 No. 100 pp.2373-2374 in his article Brievenwegers met posttarieven comes R.J. Kok to the same conclusion. The assumption that Ph.J. Maul no longer made scales during the war, yields 1940 as a border year. | back of the scale |
