Black Forest bear with letter scale | These wood-carved bears are usually said to have come from the Black Forest in Germany. But they are also referred to as Brienzer bears. Brienz is a lot further south in Switzerland. There are different versions: a letter scale with a sitting bear, sometimes near a tree stump as shown before here, with a standing bear, with a bear lying on its back. The letter scales go up to 50 grams, or up to 60 grams or, like this one, up to 100 grams. Sometimes something else can be indicated on the basis of the scale mechanism. For example, there are self-adjusting scales, these are of a more recent date. | back of the scale |
