Jugendstil scale, maker G. Kern & Sohn | This Jugendstilwaage, this is the name that Gottlieb Kern & Sohn himself used in the catalogs from 1984 to 1992 is said to be a replica. The original precision scale was designed in 1910 and was intended for use by pharmacists and goldsmiths. The original version had stop arms under the weighing lever and in addition to the brass gram weights from 1 to 20 (3 x 1g, 2g, 5g, 2 x 10g, and 20g) also had a number of aluminum gram-part weights from 10 milligrams under a glass plate. This replica has no stop arms. The gram-part weights and the glass plate are also missing. Moreover, it is strange to supply 100 grams of weights (1g, 2 x 2g, 5g, 2 x 10g, 20g and 50g) with a precision scale with a limit value of 50 grams on the weighing lever, and not as originally a total of 50 grams of brass weights. The original black polished wooden base plate stands on square flat blocks of wood. Here the base plate is made of brown lacquered oak and this base plate has three felt glued sliding surfaces. A slightly more expensive version on a marble base was also offered. A replica is an accurate copy of an object, which does not seem to be the case here. The catalogs state that this replica can be used as a letter scale, tea scale, spice scale, chemical scale, et cetera. The dimensions of the base are 202 by 112.5 millimeters, the maximum height of the scale is 190 millimeters. | back of the scale |
