letter scale by Jakob Maul
This letter scale was made by Jakob Maul from Zell in Germany. The JM logo is in the vertical frame part. This logo was used until the early 1980s. The left strip of the scale mechanism reads: NIET VOOR HANDELSDOELEINDEN (Dutch meaning: not for commercial purposes). All parts are made of magnetic steel. Part is painted black, part has a brass top layer. The 100 grams scale, executed in black and white, has a stripe for each gram. To increase legibility, there are longer stripes at five grams and multiples thereof. Citation of numbers is limited to 0, 20, 40, 50, 60, 80 and 100. The gram unit is indicated on the left of the scale by the letter g. This letter scale is 17 centimeters high. The letter plate is 7 x 5.5 cm. The steel strip base is 10.5 x 8 cm.
The following details are for the hard core of letter scale collectors only: Previously shown 100 grams letter scales by Jakob Maul are slightly different, the base of the frame is a folded tin, see here. The frame is made in two colors and has a zero adjustment screw with a plastic head, see this scale. Or the letter scale has a cast base of the frame, see here or has a base that is partly cast and partly strip steel, see this copy. There are also differences in letter plates, in counterweight and in zero adjustment screws. The text NIET VOOR HANDELSDOELEINDEN is sometimes not present, or is there in two lines below each other.
