This MACITO is made by Jakob Maul from Zell in Germany. The Macito trademark was registered in 1932 and was not deleted until 1973. This is the third Macito on this website. Previously, the round version and the angular version were shown. Both versions are not self-adjusting but, for example, should be set to zero by means of a rotary knob when the position is skewed, and they only have a scale on one side. The MACITO shown here does reset itself to zero in the event of an obliquity and can be read from both sides. The measurement scale on the front increases from zero on the left up to 500 grams. Up to 100 grams, each gram has a stripe of measure. From 100 grams to 500 grams there is a stripe per five grams. The measurement scale on the back increases from right to left. The scale mechanism has two counterweights, at 100 grams the second counterweight is put in action. A third weight keeps the measurement scales at zero at skew. At the bottom of the front of the scale housing is the MACITO trademark. Just below it is the abbreviation D.R.G.M. that stands for Deutsches Reich Gebrauchs Muster, a design protection faster and cheaper to get compared to a patent. I have not yet found the relevant Gebrauchsmuster. This MACITO version is quite rare. The simpler angular model is probably of more recent date, its back plate still has the contour of the reading window pressed in, but that reading window is not punched out. This Macito is 22.5 centimeters high, the base measures 15.8 x 7.2 x 2.0 cm. The scale housing is 12.3 and 18.2 cm wide, 4.2 cm deep and 15.8 cm high on top of the base. The letter tray is 11.5 x 10.0 cm. The three millimeter holes on the front and back are to be used during transport. A round bar through the top holes then restricts the movement of the scale mechanism. A round bar through the lower holes blocks the movement of the third weight with both measurement scales.
Below are some more images of this rare double sided Macito letter scale.
