letter scale with three Aeolus heads | This letter scale stands on an elegant brass base. On the three corners is the head of Aeolus, the god of the wind. It looks like an old letter scale because the counterweight is located under the measurements scale. In more recent letter scales, the counterweight is usually located to the left of the measurements scale. The range of the scale is sixty grams and has stripes per five grams. Only the numbers 0, 15, 30, 45, 50 and 60 are on the scale. The unit of measure is indicated by Gr. The used (stainless?) steel screws look strange. It appears that not all parts are original. The original post attachment with threaded end and nut on the decorative base was twisted and could no longer be properly secured. I made a replacement mounting, better and more solid. I secured the rickety upper fork of the mechanism by brazing. With a smaller letter plateau, a zero equilibrium has been achieved. The reading wire had disappeared from the scale, the reading was also recreated by me. The geometry of this Aeolus decorative foot differs slightly from the decorative feet that can be seen in the Kistler and Philipp Jakob Maul catalogs, see the images at the bottom of this page. A partially openwork Aeolus decorative base was previously shown, see this page. | back of the letter scale |
