the El Casco letter scale | This bilateral letter scale was made by El Casco from Eibar in the Spanish Basque Country. The factory still exists and makes luxurious and expensive office items such as staplers, letter openers, pencil sharpeners and hole punches. The letter scale is no longer in the range. I do not yet know from when to when the letter scales were made. The construction is a strange variation on the more well-known bilateral letter scales with a central upright, see for example this Ph.J. Maul, en this unbranded one, and with the first patent drawings this bilateral scale of Balduin Heller's Söhne. With the El Casco, the rear wall, side walls and front wall of the scale house are used to secure the various threaded shafts. The scale base and scale housing are made of two millimeter thick sheet steel. The letter scale is therefore heavy and therefore also suitable as a paperweight. The El Casco weighs no less than 655 grams. The lower measuring scale up to 40 grams has a stripe for each gram. The upper measuring scale shows a stripe of measure per five grams from 40 to 150 grams. The scale appears chromed. The top pointer of most of the second-hand copies offered has disappeared, apparently it is a vulnerable part. This top pointer was also missing on this copy, so I completed the letter scale with a replacement. | back of the El Casco letter scale |
