Rowenta letter scale
letter scale

I don't know who manufactured this distinctive little letter scale. Rowenta itself did not manufacture this scale. It only was sold under the brand name of Rowenta. This name is applied to the back of the housing. The trade name ROWENTA is an acronym of the founders name RObert WEiNTrAud. See here for an earlier postal scale of Weintraud.
The height of this letter scale is only 8 centimeters. Looking at the unit of measurements -GRAMM- this scale was intended for the German market. The range is 100 grams. Per 5 grams a measurement stripe is set. Per 10 grams there are also figures. The left side of the chart equals the right side. The scale has remarkable stylish patterns at the sides and at the top of the plate. In Equilibrium, 1989 no. 3 at page 1263, figure 24 presents a similar little scale. The unit of measurement looks to be ounces. For the decoration one applied  the color  blue, at  my scale it is brown.  The period

indicated for the scale is 1930s. The maker is unknown. The bottom of the Rowenta is covered with a cardboard layer, of which the top surface is covered with a layer of green felt. The picture at the right shows the Rowenta in front of a much taller letter scale. Below some more pictures of this cute remarkable little letter scale.
