![]() Jakob Maul letter scale | This letter scale has a special zero adjustment. The entire scale can be tilted on the base to set the scale to zero. This adjustment mechanism is described in the German patent DE555627. It was granted on July 25, 1932 to the company Jakob Maul in Zell, Kr. Erbach, Hesse. The purpose of this adjustment mechanism is to avoid scratches on table tops. According to the patent text, conventional zero adjustment screws caused such scratches. The scale on the patent drawing has a moving measuring scale and a stationary pointer, just like the letter scale shown here. The scale may be more recent than 1932. The scale has a capacity of 100 grams. The scale has a stripe of measure for each gram. Previously, several Jakob Maul letter scales have been shown with the same zero setting mechanism, see for example this 250 grams version. That letter scale has a stationary measuring scale and a moving pointer. | ![]() back of the letter scale |
