Pondo kitchen scale, Carl Schöning
This large scale is a kitchen scale probably made by Carl Schöning GmbH Maschinenfabrik und Eisengießerei, from Berlin, Germany. Schöning himself also wrote the name as Schoening. The scale has two ranges, the weighing range to be used is selected by placing or not placing the supplied loose counterweight. Without the loose counterweight, the measuring scale from 0 to 3 kilos is used, this scale is subdivided per 25 grams. With the extra counterweight mounted, the measuring scale from 3 kilos to 10 kilos is used, this scale has a stripe per 50 grams. The scales each have their own indicating pointer point. The dish for the weighing material rests detachably on the plate holder. The mechanism features hardened steel knife edge bearings on the main pivot point. A wide spring steel tension band holds the main knife edge bearing in position, preventing lateral displacement and thus disruptive friction. A leaf spring holds the cast iron yoke in position. This kitchen scale is based on the German patent DE398605 of March 3, 1923. It is registered in the name of Otto Schmidt from Berlin-Tegel and was published on July 18, 1924. Some differences are visible; in the patent, there is one counterweight that can be placed in two positions on the counterweight arm. The kitchen scale shown here has one fixed position for the counterweight onto which a second counterweight can be screwed. This scale, with the leaf spring on the yoke and the knife edge supports, moves extremely smoothly. However, this also causes it to swing annoyingly for a prolonged period; therefore, a finger-operated handbrake was added, which is a rather primitive addition. The advertisement mentions an automatic brake, but it cannot be found on this scale.
