![]() mirrored egg scale | This is the sort of thing that gets an avid collector a little excited! This is a *mirrored* egg scale. When I saw this egg scale on an auction site, I had to look very closely. If the photo had been mirrored, surely that would have been apparent from the numbers on the scale. But no, they were actually positioned correctly. The moving part of this egg scale is mounted in the fixed frame the other way around, and the scale has been fitted with a corresponding graduated scale where the weight values increase from right to left! The more common version, featuring a scale that increases from left to right, has previously been shown on this website; see here. Up until now, I had only ever seen that version. I don't know why this strange, mirrored version was made. Does it have something to do with right- or left-handed users? | ![]() back of the scale |
The main shaft is qualitatively beautifully executed, the shaft ends as cones and the play is adjustable. I do not know what oil is used in this egg scale. In another oil-damped letter scale of the Royal Dutch Mail (PTT), see for example the J.S. Velthoen & Zn., brake fluid Vitrex 69 was used. I suppose Shell Tellus 30 or 40, or ordinary salad oil also will do the job and slow down the motion. There are some minor differences in detail. On the scale of several egg scales of this model, a horizontal line marks the fill level of the oil damper; on some, the Dutch word "OLIEPEIL" (oil level) is also present—sometimes as a red sticker bearing that word. This mirrored version of the scale has neither the line nor the word. Instead, there is a small overflow hole in the side wall to the right of the oil reservoir; while this certainly works well, it is also bound to cause quite a mess. The soft-soldered seams of the oil reservoir on this egg scale have come apart in several places. Repair is too complex, so the scale is no longer suitable for use; however, it remains a highly unusual specimen for an egg scale collection.
The scale is 30.8 centimeters high, the scale arm is 30 cm long. The wooden base is 19.0 x 9.7 cm.
