T.M.I. paper scale model 484 | This portable paper scale is sold by Testing Machines Incorporated, New York, N.Y., from the U.S.A.. It's model 484. This model is suited to test sheets of paper of the following three sizes: 17x22 inch, 24x36 inch en 25x38 inches. These are American paper sheet formats. The hinged storage box contains the paper scale, a two parts stand, and a template consisting of a top plate and a bottom plate. The mounted parts of the stand fit into a hole of the lid of the storage box. In this way quickly a sufficiently firm stand for the paper scale is made. One puts a sheet of paper between the plates of the template and cuts it with a sharp knife or scalpel alongside the edges of the template, this results in a test paper with the template size 2 x 4 inches. Subsequently the test paper is attached to the hook of the paper scale, and one reads one of the three scales and thus finds the weight in pounds of 500 sheets of paper. 500 sheets equals 1 ream in the current paper business. With this paper scale it is possible to test paper up to 100 Lbs. per ream, provided that the sheet of paper is of one of the specified size. | ready to weigh paper scale |
Extensive information about paper is presented at Wikipedia. This paper scale design most probably is based upon the European paper scales of A. van der Korput, the subsequent H.A. Büchel and the German paper scale.
