Salter letter balance No. 11 | This letter scale created by the company Geo. Salter & Co.. Ltd, West Bromwich, England is marked with No. 11. The scale of measure has the shape of a dial. The weighing range of 24 ounces is subdivided per ¼ ounce. 1 ounce = about 28.35 grams and 1 pound = 16 ounces. So the weighing range equals 1½ pounds. At the inner circle is the postage rates for letters: 1½D (pence) at 1 ounce, 2D (two pence) at 3 oz., 2½D at 4 oz., 3D at 5 oz., then add ever ½D per each oz. up to 24 oz has a letter rate of 1 sh. (1 shilling) plus ½D. Somewhat peculiar is that at 2 oz. also the rate of 2D is shown. The letter rate shown was valid in Great Britain in the very short period of May 29, 1922 until May 14, 1923. The design of this letter scale existed even longer already because it was published in the Salter catalog of 1898. There were even several versions: one with a copper or an enamel dial, with a copper or an nickel-plated platform, or at an additional cost with a porcelain dial and a nickel-plated platform. Also an electro copper bronzed scale at additional cost was available. In a 1899 catalog of Salter is stated that the Salter No. 11 is also available with a weighing range of

1 kilograms subdivided per 10 grams and with the desired local national postal letter rates on the dial. The No. 11 model is in appearance very similar to other scales made by Salter, for instance the brown plain No. 11, the green No. 11, the chrome No. 11. Below are some more pictures of this elegant Salter postal letter balance No. 11.
