lightweight Fertig Ph.J. Maul | This little letter scale has the M-logo of Philipp Jakob Maul at the left brass strip of the mechanism. At the extra pendulum arm is pressed in: D.R.G.M. This is the abbreviation of: Deutsches Reich Gebrauchs Muster. This was a model registration, quicker granted and cheaper than a patent registration. I still don't know whether or not a D.R.G.M. really was granted. The characteristic of this scale, similar to the FERTIG, is the indicator which is built like an extra pendulum, and thus acts like a self-adjusting mechanism. Placed on a slope the chart will rotate to a new resting position, but this type of indicator simply follows the chart to this new zero position. A separate leveling zero adjusting screw is not necessary with this type of letter scale design. The indicator is beautifully cut-out and folded. The range of this little scale is 100 grams. This design also exists in 250 grams and 500 grams. | rear of scale |

According to the literature this is the lightweight version of the Fertig, it is so called because there is no separate mass added to the free end of the indicator arm. After the ending of the Fertig patent in 1932, Maul continued the application of the Fertig idea in some of his scale designs. The name Fertig was not put on those designs. It's strange that D.R.G.M. is still stamped on this letter scale. The scale of 100 grams has a division stripe for each gram. The scale is placed concav. The concav logo and the text concav are on the scale. The specific indication of 5 grams is very odd. The base of this letter scale is exceptional solid. The design with the cubic shaped broadening is applied in several other models. For instance at the concav letter scale and also at the REFLEX. Below some more photos of this small letter scale.
