The housing of this letter scale has a beautiful front due to the pattern of stripes and the symmetrically placed window with the measuring scale. The back also has the beautiful striped pattern, but does not have a chrome edge. The bottom has a furniture protective layer. This letter scale fits in the Art Deco period from 1920 to 1939. This scale has a handle on the top of the housing for switching the range of weighing. As desired 100 or 250 grams. The chart of 100 grams has a stripe per each gram. The 250 grams chart is subdivided per five grams. The chart can be rotated with the knob situated at the right side of the house to adjust it to zero. This side also has the logo JM. The scale mechanism is protected with the Deutsches Reich Patent with number 676942 was granted on December 25 1937. It mentions Dipl.Ing. Fritz Scharmann as the inventor. The patent was announced on May 25 1939 and was published June 15 1939. These scales were made by the company Jakob Maul, from Zell in Germany. In the Friedmann & Seumer Bürobedarf catalog from 1957, this letter scale has the model name Domac.
At the bottom of this page are different colored versions: black, red, olive green and this version in grey hammered. On a previous page the dark brown version was shown. The red version can be found on this page. The rather rare version in olive green is also on a separate page, with more pictures of the different colored scales at the bottom. On this page is the black version. In addition to the different colors, there are differences in base plate design, stone or metal, chromed or in the color of the scale. Some copies also have a chrome trim on the back, in most copies the trim on the back has the color of the scale.
The base plate is 13.7 x 5.3 cm, the letter tray is 13.5 cm high and is 7.2 x 5.7 cm. The scale housing is 12.4 cm wide and 4.3 cm deep.
Below are some more images of this Art Deco letter scale in grey metallic.
