Salter letter scale No. 11 | This letter scale made by the company Geo. Salter & Co. Ltd, West Bromwich, England is designated No. 11. The scale is shaped like a dial. The weighing range of 1000 grams is subdivided per 10 grams and the postal weight limit of 15 grams is indicated separately. An 1899 Salter catalog states that the Salter No. 11 with a weighing range of 1 kilo subdivided per 10 grams and can be delivered with the desired local national postal rates. The model of this letter scale existed a little longer because the model can also be seen in the Salter catalog of 1898. Even several versions were available: with a copper or enamel dial, with a copper or nickel-plated letter plate, or at an additional cost with a porcelain dial and nickel-plated letter plate. A letter balance with a bronzed housing - obtained through an electro-copper process - could also be supplied at an additional cost. The scale model can also be recognized in other more recent scales by Salter, see for example the brown smooth No. 11, the green No. 11, or the chromed No. 11. | back of the letter scale |
There are a few striking details: the stripes of measure and numbers appear to be partly hand-painted, here and there help lines are just visible. The place on the dial of the No.11 indication is here below the pointer axis, usually it is above it. A lobe of the cast iron housing is missing on the right, it was probably broken away at some point. There are no national postal rates on the dial. The dial is lacquered, here and there there is discoloration due to rust and the lacquer is missing in some places. The letter plate is made of brass. The cast iron scale body, dial and pointer are magnetic. The letter scale is 173 millimeters high, the diameter of the letter plate is 83 millimeters.
